Score Types

Several reports (e.g., Development Summary, Ordered Dev Summary) displays a series of four scores that summarize the children’s development within the super-agency, agency, center, or class. Three of the scores are norm-referenced scores, which are used by educators and researchers while one of them is a path-referenced score.

Norm-referenced scores have been widely used in accountability programs. The Developmental Level Score is useful in determining the proportion of children who have met a certain performance objective

Percentile Rank

This is a norm-referenced score. The easiest to interpret is the percentile rank, which indicates how many children out of a hundred would generally have a lower score on a particular measure. The median percentage is 50%.  For the scales in Galileo, the comparison group is other children in the same age range.

Standard Score

This is a norm-referenced score. This score, also known as a Z Score, displays the children’s position in the norm group with an average score of zero (0). Scores above 0 are above average, and scores below 0 are below average. Standard scores from -1 to +1 are in the average range.

Normal Curve Equivalent Score

This is a norm-referenced score. This is another type of standard score, but instead of the average being set at 0, the average is 50. The score ranges from 1 to 99 with range of normal at 30 to 70.

Developmental Level Score

This is a path-referenced score. This score indicates the child group’s average position on a path of development comprised of a series of ordered capabilities outlining a developmental progression for a given developmental area. The higher the number, the more capabilities the child group has mastered on average. Refer to the Estimated Growth and Predicted Development Research Briefs located on the Estimated Growth and Predicted Development page for interpretation guidance.
