Galileo provides the ability to update observations by class, thus allowing you to document one or more children's observations for a scale. A baseline observation using the Pathfinder/Amount Learned tool should first be done on the Observations by Child page. Ongoing (subsequent) observations are documented in one of the observational pages. (Refer to the Enter Observation for Returning Child page if necessary.)
1. Click Assessment>Enter Observations>By Class.
2. If you are an Agency- or Center-level user, use the down arrow on the Center drop-down menu to select the center to which the child(ren) you wish to observe belongs.
3. Use the down arrow on the Class drop-down menu to select the class to which the child(ren) you wish to observe belongs.
4. Select the Developmental Area Scale.
5. Select the Observation Date (defaults to today).
6. A grid appears. Across the top are the names of all the children in your class. (If any are missing or are no longer with your class, please contact your Galileo Administrator.) Along the left are all of the capabilities for the selected Developmental Area scale.
7. Select the data Source.
8. Work either by entering information by column or by row.
a. Record Multiple Observations by Child (column): When recording observations on a specific child for multiple capabilities, you will work within a column.
b. Record Observation for Multiple Children (row): When recording a specific capability for multiple children, you will work within a row.
9. (optional) Click the goal to view the goal example. Refer to the Scale Examples for further details.
10. Place the cursor at the intersection of the child’s name and the desired capability.
11. Each colored square represents a Readiness level.
a. Green = Ready Now
b. Blue = Ready Soon
c. White = Ready Later
Anecdotal notes are optional. Refer to Anecdotal Notes page for further details.
12. Click the number to the left of the capability you want to mark as Learned.
13. A text entry box appears. Today’s date and the capability are automatically populated. Edit the date, if necessary.
14. Enter notes next to the capability.
a. This note applies to all children you will check as having learned the capability.
b. (optional) Click the Spell Check button.
c. Click the Record button.
15. Click in the desired colored square and a red checkmark appears.
16. Click the Save Changes button or the computer disk icon below the Knowledge Area.
17. The checkmark(s) turn black to show that the information is saved. If any anecdotal notes were entered, they now apply to all children who had red checkmarks in that capability’s row.
This report generates a worksheet for recording class observations for a selected scale. Refer to Class Observation Record for further details on this report.
